Paying Tuition and Rent in Europe With Wise (Sept 2026)
Since moving to Italy I pay rent and tuition through Wise. Here is how I fund it from Taiwan (an international wire plus a pre-registered transfer account), why the rate beats a normal bank, how the virtual and physical cards work, what the 1% interest actually pays out, and how support handled moving my address from Taiwan to Italy.
If you are studying in Italy, Wise is worth having as your European money rail. I pay rent and tuition through it, and money moves in and out quickly enough that it has been a good experience.
This is how I actually use it, including what funding it from Taiwan costs.
Why Wise instead of a normal bank
Mostly the exchange rate. Wise uses the real mid-market rate with transparent fees, so you avoid both the chunky flat fee and the worse rate a normal bank quietly builds into the transfer.
For a student the difference is noticeable, because tuition and rent are large amounts to begin with. A couple of percentage points of spread is real money.
Funding it from Taiwan
The flow that works: you or your parents go into a bank branch in Taiwan and set up an international wire together with a pre-registered transfer account. That combination lets you fund Wise in one go.
Two things to know:
- A wire costs somewhere north of NT$1,000 each time, so send larger amounts less often rather than a stream of small transfers
- Set up the pre-registered account so that later top-ups can be done online instead of another trip to the counter, which saves you and your parents a lot of time
The virtual card
Wise also gives you a virtual debit card, which works well in Europe once it is in Apple Pay.
There are no rewards to speak of, but the record-keeping is clear: every transaction, the rate applied and where the money went. That is genuinely useful when you are still working out what living here costs.
The physical card, once you have an Italian address
The virtual card works without an Italian address, but the physical card needs your Wise address to be Italian first. Once the address is updated, you order it from the Cards tab in the app under "Get a physical card".
The order itself is short:
- Delivery address: each line is capped at 30 characters, so a long student-residence address has to be split across the second and third lines
- Pick your own PIN during the order
- Pay the card fee: for Italy (EEA) the standard green card runs about 5 to 8 EUR, payable from your Wise balance
- You do not have to wait for it: the card number, CVV and expiry show up in the app immediately, and it can go straight into Apple Pay or Google Pay
I ordered on 26 August and the estimated delivery was roughly two weeks out. Note that standard delivery in Italy is not tracked, so put your name on the mailbox or the card can simply go missing. When it arrives, one chip-and-PIN payment activates it.
The real gain from having the physical card is ATM cash withdrawals. Plenty of places here still prefer cash (small shops, markets, some landlord side-costs), and having no euro notes on you gets awkward fast. There is a free withdrawal allowance each month and fees above it; check the current numbers in the app, since they change.
Interest on the balance
I only recently noticed Wise pays interest on the balance too, currently 1.00% a year on euro, paid out monthly.
Worth knowing: Wise withholds 30% tax before it pays out, so what lands is less than the headline figure. The amounts are small, but better to expect it than be surprised.
Support is genuinely good
Worth calling out: Wise support was better than I expected. Replies are fast and the information is correct, not canned. The AI agent is decent too, and the steps it gave matched what the human agent said afterwards.
My case was moving my address from Taiwan to Italy. After I uploaded my tenancy agreement, support replied that the contract start date was 5 September, so the address could only change on that date. My contract had since been formally amended to start on 24 August, and once I sent the countersigned amendment, the address was updated and verified in under an hour, which is what unlocked ordering a physical card.
The documents to have ready are the tenancy agreement, enrolment letter and visa, and the verification team takes around 24 hours. If you want a physical card, change the address as soon as you land rather than starting the process when you actually need the card.
In short
For a student, Wise earns its place on four things: an honest rate, controllable costs on large transfers, clear records, and support that gives you real answers. Set up the pre-registered account on the Taiwan side once, and topping up later is a few minutes online.
