Milan ATM Travel Pass: Buy It in the App, €22 Under 27 (Sept 2026)

Half the guides online tell you to email someone, fill in a pile of forms, or queue at an ATM Point. You can just buy the Milan travel pass in the ATM app. Here are the actual steps, how the €22 Under 27 fare works, and what every pass type costs.

Milan ATM Travel Pass: Buy It in the App, €22 Under 27 (Sept 2026)

There are a lot of odd guides online telling you to email someone, fill in a pile of forms, or go buy your pass in person at an ATM Point. Buying a travel pass is much simpler than that.

We did go and queue at the Cadorna ATM Point, and the security guard handed us a booking slip for several days later. Queueing for a ticket to queue is pretty funny in hindsight.

Since that slot was so far out, I went and booked an earlier one in the app instead.

You only need three things

  1. Your tax code (if you do not have one yet, start here)
  2. The official ATM app (iOS / Android)
  3. Your address in Italy

With those you can buy the Under 27 monthly pass straight from the app.

What Under 27 means

As long as you buy it before the day of your 27th birthday, your monthly pass is €22, which is a great deal. I would buy it the moment the tax code is sorted.

The system reads your date of birth out of the tax code, so if you are in range the Under 27 price simply shows up. No extra proof needed. I am apparently too old for it, so I pay the ordinary fare.

Fares (September 2026, Milan urban area Mi1 to Mi3)

Pass Under 27 Ordinary Over 65
Monthly €22 €39 €32.50
Annual €200 €330 €300
Weekly €18.50 (any age) €18.50 €18.50

A few things worth knowing:

  • Buying several months at once does not save you anything. In the app, 2 months Under 27 is €44 and 3 months is €66, which is just the monthly price multiplied out. Only the annual pass is genuinely discounted
  • The annual pass is the real bargain. €200 Under 27 works out under €17 a month, saving €64 against twelve monthly passes
  • The pass covers everything in Mi1 to Mi3: metro, trams, buses and the suburban trains

Step by step

  1. Register an account on the ATM website or in the app
  2. Log in to the app
  3. Tap Buy at the bottom, then Travel passes

  1. Choose Digital Card, so there is nothing to wait for in the post and no card to carry

Choosing Digital Card
Pick Digital Card. Note you cannot hold a physical and a digital card at once, so an existing physical card has to be converted

  1. Fill in your details (tax code, photo and so on), using your address in Italy at the bottom
  2. Once the virtual card exists, load a pass onto it. Since your tax code carries your date of birth, the app shows the Under 27 price automatically if you qualify
  3. After paying, the card shows Available subscriptions and a Card active badge

The active card screen
Card active means you are done. This is also the screen you tap in with (card number and portrait redacted)

How to tap in

Tapping in is a slightly odd experience: open the app, tap Wallet, bring up that screen, and hold it against the reader at the gate. I find it reads more reliably with the screen facing the machine.

Verdict

The in-app flow is clear and quick, and it saves several trips to an ATM Point plus the booking wait. I had assumed a counter visit was mandatory, so I booked a slot in the app (the guard's in-person date was even later), and once it turned out the pass can be bought in the app outright, we cancelled and freed the slot for someone else.
